Beyond the screens: what I learned about career and humanity

What I’m about to share isn’t intended to belittle anyone or hurt anyone's pride, much less diminish the work of others. If this affects you negatively, please forgive me. I am sorry.

I have just accepted a job that, years ago, I never would have imagined taking: a shelf stocker at a grocery store. I don’t say this out of malice, but I am 27 years old with 7 years of experience in the tech industry. At the end of last year (2025), I was laid off. For the first time since my very first job, I was asked to leave the company.

Ambition or greed?

Over these years, I was always chasing a better job, a higher salary, or better benefits. Whenever an opportunity appeared, even when I was in a good place, I moved on, rarely staying in the same company for more than a year. Today, with 7 years of experience, I’ve been through 4 companies. This makes me think that my ambition might not have been as great as my greed; I didn't stay, I didn't improve, and I didn't grow—I just ran away to the next chance whenever something didn't please me.

And, for the first time, I wasn't the one who asked to leave. The company didn't want me anymore. The reason given is always the same—cost-cutting—but, honestly, if they were completely satisfied, I probably wouldn't have been let go. Deep down, the fault is mine, too.

The silence of the market

It’s been 8 months since I became unemployed, sending out resumes and doing interviews only to receive that recurring email: "We regret to inform you that we will not be moving forward with your application." There have been dozens, perhaps hundreds. It’s discouraging and makes one question if I should really continue in this field. I reached out to all my previous employers, and none of them had any openings.

If I’ve learned anything from all this, it is: don’t throw opportunities away because of greed, fear, arrogance, or anger, because time—even if it takes a while—will eventually come knocking at your door.
